Many landscapes are just perceived as “filling empty areas between buildings, housing developments, highways and urban centres, or being vague sectors capable of managing themselves”. In other words, they are often described as vacant areas with little value, just waiting to be developed, to be rendered useful with some identifiable (mostly economic or functional) functions…
This is certainly a question we could ask ourselves when we are in a space, a place, a "landscape" which perplex us with its pertinence, functionality, workmanship or its intrinsic power...
The quest is on for the landscapes with an appreciation level making those memorable, almost impossible to miss.
As for the first edition - "Significant landscapes" - the sites or places could be designed or mostly natural, urban or rural, popular and visited by crowds or remote and highly personal.
The main difference between the editions is that we are now looking at landscapes that are part of our "dreams"...
