THE INFINITELY VARIED LANDSCAPES OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

What is striking about the images presented in this BC collection, is how well the photographers have recognized and captured The effects that weather and natural processes have had on shaping unique landforms and ecosystems. Some of these spaces have been protected through the work of visionaries and strategic planning while other spaces are at risk under development pressure. Strategically planned routes provide human access, while promoting the understanding that these landscapes deserve respect and stewardship.

From mountains to wetlands to desert to ocean, the interconnected landscapes of British Columbia profoundly affect and inspire all that come in contact with the uniqueness of this land. Weather patterns offer a lens which changes our perspective and appreciation of the landscape over time. The search for cool shade and water in the desert during the summer is replaced with the need for warmth and enclosure when a snow storm hits. The roar of an approaching wind in a majestic grove of trees is contrasted with the stillness of a pond’s surface in the early morning hours. To experience these changes we must leave the comforts of the built environment and step into the natural landscape prepared to patiently observe processes which remain inexorably beyond our control.

The ability to capture such moments with a camera lens provides us with a glimpse into the experiences that have influenced the photographer. The resulting images challenge us to appreciate the intricacies of our wildly varied landscapes.

Resilient farm

Description
▶︎ Dairy farms and the fields of hay and grain that support them are a major component of the landscape aesthetic of the lower Fraser Valley. As well as being important food supply contributors (BC is the 3rd largest dairy supplier in Canada), the farms provide a beautiful open space transition between the dense urban areas of the lower mainland and the surrounding mountain ranges. Sadly, pressure to sell the land to developers puts these farms at risk.

Urban escape

Description
▶︎ Beacon Hill Park, located in the heart of Victoria, is the City’s major park and the western terminus of the Trans Canada Highway. Despite its enormous year round popularity with both tourists and locals it offers a sense of tranquility and harmony with a nature. It is somewhat unique in that an 1882 bylaw still prevents commercial activity in the 200 park, including sales of food and drink.

Beach time

Description
▶︎ The wide beach and warm, shallow and calm water of Witty’s Lagoon make it a perfect spot to wade, skim board and check for shells. It is the exact opposite of the rocky shorelines and cold seas that are prevalent on the West coast.

Neighbourhood bay

Description
▶︎ The simplicity and casualness of the Oak Bay Harbour makes it a beloved neighbourhood where locals meet to launch kayaks and have morning coffees, or simply hang out and watch the freighters go by. Its not that tourists aren’t allowed, just that they don’t know this spot exists.

The neighbourhood

Description
▶︎ The many beautiful tree lined streets throughout Greater Victoria create a strong sense of place along with coveted niches of neighbourhood pride and solidarity. New developments strive to create similar environments but struggle due to increased density, competition with servicing and, sometimes, a lack of ecological understanding. This particular street is in south Oak Bay, an old and highly desirable part of the City.

Miami of the North

Description
▶︎ This view of well irrigated grape vines, motor boats on Okanagan Lake, and very dry hills beyond, is quintessential Okanagan in the summer. The Okanagan Valley has the lowest per person water supply in Canada and its economy, in particular major industries such as agriculture and tourism, depends on healthy and plentiful water resources.

The mountains are alive

Description
▶︎ Far off the grid and off my snowmobile, I set my eyes on what many may never see. I was a dot in the landscape. An innocently, unprepared visitor humbled by the powerful, magnitude and scale of our natural world. The experience created a sense of unpredictability, excitement and appreciation.
