The Canadian Landscape Portfolio second edition seeks landscapes which were altered by human activities, mostly by design. These landscapes can be simple or sophisticated, urban, rural or more natural. We are looking for what makes them noticeable, why those designed places or sites are perceived as special and remembered. Again, it is about taking some time to have a second look at the "designed landscapes" that surround us, all those spaces that participate at making our life more agreeable, more efficient, more beautiful. In the end, they are also part of our favourite landscapes…

DESIGNED LANDSCAPES - CLP SECOND EDITION

Everything needed for a successful submission…

The second edition of the Canadian Landscapes Portfolio aims to find landscapes on which there were human interventions. They may be simple or sophisticated, urban or forested. What makes them stand out from all these areas and sites that were transformed over time is that those that you will submit will have left a mark on you.

Therefore, once again, it is time to pause and seize these “managed, designed” landscapes, those that, day in and day out, contribute to making our lives more enjoyable and/or efficient.

In the end, they are also among our favourite landscapes...

The second edition of the Canadian Landscape Portfolio (CLP) will also be, like the first edition, an online gallery of digital photographs illustrating Canada’s diversity of landscapes by provinces and territories. It will also be compiled from photos submitted by landscape architects who are members of the CSLA - it has to be noticed that interns and students attending to landscape architecture programs will be accepted.

The 2016-17 edition will focus on highlighting the various “designed landscapes" mentioned in the Canadian Landscape Charter, especially those that surround us and that we appreciate. They are landscapes that, through their design, contribute to making our lives more enjoyable or efficient. The goal of this second edition of the Portfolio is not necessarily about finding the most picturesque, rare or exhilarating places, but more about capturing a space that benefited from interventions that made it more attractive or suitable to our regular activities. We could therefore consider the 2016-17 edition of the CLP as an illustrated addition to the Canadian Landscape Charter as seen through the eyes of landscape architects from across the country, an expression of a vision where all managed landscapes become important, because they contribute to our lives.

This edition of the Portfolio is in continuity with the first edition which is aiming at illustrating the Canadian Landscapes Charter's precepts that all landscapes are:
  • Of public interest, entailing various dimensions ranging from culture to ecology and economy.
  • Favourable to viable economic activities with appropriate means of interventions.
  • Integral to the Canadian identity and its diverse cultures.
  • Naturally in constant change, with many under economic stresses.
  • A major contributor to the quality of life for all people living in all types of settings

To illustrate the emphasis placed by the CLC on the rich diversity of Canadian landscapes, the second edition will add a gallery of images composed of ten (10) digital collections, one per province and territory, each led by a component association of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). This "Designed Landscapes" gallery will be added to the already existing "Significant Landscapes".

One of the Designed Landscapes Portfolio second edition key objective is to be in continuity with the Significant Landscapes Portfolio.

To achieve this goal, it shares all of the original objectives:

The first phase wants to reach everyone:

  • By sharing Canadian landscape architect’s vision about "landscapes" available to the greatest number of stakeholders;
  • By favouring common and accessible technologies to present this vision about landscapes;
  • By illustrating through these images one or many principles from the Canadian Landscape Charter:
    Some examples could be: recognize landscape as vital; practice participatory and collaborative processes; increase awareness and understanding; identify the complex multidimensional and interdependent values of the landscape; encourage knowledge sharing; etc.;…
  • By facilitating a conversation between all CSLA’s members, other stakeholders acting on landscapes and the general public on the importance of “all landscapes”

The second phase is about "landscape architecture"…

  • Invite all landscape architects who are members of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects to submit digital photographs that capture the personal extent of a "designed" site, space, landscape from all Canadian province or territory. Those images are to show the personal perspective of a site seen as "significant, meaningful": it can be public or private;
  • Link each of these images to a description to why they are significant, meaningful to the author and how they participate to their quality of life - it could be a place to rest, work, eat, exchange, share, take care, love, meet, help, study, meditate, communicate, cooperate, relax, day-dream, have fun, etc. It is all about our interactions with the different landscapes that surround us;
  • Illustrate one or several of the Canadian Landscape Charter principles & values using these images;
  • Encourage the participation of each component association to select the images that will make up their Collection of designed meaningful landscapes from their province or territory;
  • Initiate a conversation between all CSLA’s members, other stakeholders and the general public on the importance of “well designed landscapes”.

IN CONCLUSION, THE CANADIAN LANDSCAPES PORTFOLIO INITIATIVE IS:

  • About sharing and exchanging with the widest audience about the importance of all landscapes, designed or not;
  • Exploring how our interactions with various landscapes affect us;
  • Raising greater awareness on how landscape architecture, as practiced by Canadian landscape architects, participates in the protection, design and management of all types of landscapes.

For the CLP, landscape architecture is :

At the crossroads of development and design, landscape architecture specializes in the planning and development of new landscapes, and in the management, enhancement, protection and restoration of existing landscapes, ranging from the smallest local area to regional planning. Landscape architecture intervention’s scale and diversity drive the landscape architects toward the cultural, heritage, social, aesthetic, economic and environmental interconnecting perspectives. Depending on the context, these are realized with stakeholders’ involvement and/or multidisciplinary collaboration, and they could include all steps relating to the completion of a landscape project, from its planning to its execution and supervision, from its estimation to the invitation to bid, etc.
Canadian Landscape Charter

The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) is a professional organization with over 1,980 landscape architects as members. As the voice of the profession in Canada, the CSLA is an advocate for its members on issues such as urban design, urban renewal, sustainable development and cultural heritage.

The CSLA delivers programs and services for its members that:
  • increase public awareness and promote the profession - the CSLA communication tools include the website (www.csla-aapc.ca), the membership directory, a monthly bulletin, social media sites and LANDSCAPES|PAYSAGES, the national magazine;
  • provide opportunities for professional development - the CSLA holds an Annual General Meeting and Congress, provides information year round to members about industry and professional learning opportunities and coordinates continuing education programs and opportunities nationally;
  • recognize members and celebrate member achievements within the profession through the CSLA Awards of Excellence, the Recognition Awards Programs, the College of Fellows and by administering the Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture;

Dreamed Landscapes Portfolio

The Portfolio's third edition, "Dreamed Landscapes", wishes to be a conclusion to the Initiative where a more diversified group of participants will be invited to record digitally "any kind of landscape" that could be seen as EXCEPTIONAL, a DREAMED LANDSCAPE.

This site, place or landscape could be natural and untouched or entirely artificial, the result of human interventions…

Still, the participants will have to describe why this site is so important to them.
