The second edition of the Canadian Landscapes Portfolio aims to find landscapes on which there were human interventions. They may be simple or sophisticated, urban or forested. What makes them stand out from all these areas and sites that were transformed over time is that those that you will submit will have left a mark on you.
Therefore, once again, it is time to pause and seize these “managed, designed” landscapes, those that, day in and day out, contribute to making our lives more enjoyable and/or efficient.
In the end, they are also among our favourite landscapes...
The second edition of the Canadian Landscape Portfolio (CLP) will also be, like the first edition, an online gallery of digital photographs illustrating Canada’s diversity of landscapes by provinces and territories. It will also be compiled from photos submitted by landscape architects who are members of the CSLA - it has to be noticed that interns and students attending to landscape architecture programs will be accepted.
The 2016-17 edition will focus on highlighting the various “designed landscapes" mentioned in the Canadian Landscape Charter, especially those that surround us and that we appreciate. They are landscapes that, through their design, contribute to making our lives more enjoyable or efficient. The goal of this second edition of the Portfolio is not necessarily about finding the most picturesque, rare or exhilarating places, but more about capturing a space that benefited from interventions that made it more attractive or suitable to our regular activities. We could therefore consider the 2016-17 edition of the CLP as an illustrated addition to the Canadian Landscape Charter as seen through the eyes of landscape architects from across the country, an expression of a vision where all managed landscapes become important, because they contribute to our lives.
This edition of the Portfolio is in continuity with the first edition which is aiming at illustrating the Canadian Landscapes Charter's precepts that all landscapes are:
- Of public interest, entailing various dimensions ranging from culture to ecology and economy.
- Favourable to viable economic activities with appropriate means of interventions.
- Integral to the Canadian identity and its diverse cultures.
- Naturally in constant change, with many under economic stresses.
- A major contributor to the quality of life for all people living in all types of settings
To illustrate the emphasis placed by the CLC on the rich diversity of Canadian landscapes, the second edition will add a gallery of images composed of ten (10) digital collections, one per province and territory, each led by a component association of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). This "Designed Landscapes" gallery will be added to the already existing "Significant Landscapes".
